The Hepzibah Institute of Heritage Conservation (HeriCons) was founded by Dr. V. Jeyaraj, former Curator, Chemical Conservation and Research Laboratory, Government Museum, Chennai-600 008, on 8th March 2009 in order to train interested persons in the field of conservation of heritage and museology with a view of safeguarding the cultural, artistic and written heritage. It conducts regularly training programmes in conservation and restoration of heritage materials and museology in the institute, arranges workshops and seminars in colleges and other cultural institutions besides delivering lectures in the field. It provides consultancy services in heritage conservation and museology to those who approach the Institute in this regard.

Workshop on Conservation and Restoration of Book Materials

Hepzibah Institute of Heritage Conservation (HeriCons) conducts a short-term Workshop on Conservation and Restoration of Book Materials for those who are employed in cultural institutions like libraries, archives, museums, galleries, colleges, corporate offices and also to those who are interested in this field. This workshop is slated for the period from 27th November to 3rd December 2018 (6 working days). The last date for the receipt of application is 24th November 2018.

Syllabus of the Workshop

The following titles will be handled during the workshop. 1. Introduction to written and printing heritage including the history of records, books, archival materials, 2. Material Science of written and printed heritage, 3. Documentation including photography, 4. Damaging agencies to the written and printed heritage, 5. Preventive Conservation, 6. Interventive Conservation, 7. Conservation of written and printed materials, 8. Restoration of written and printed materials, 9. Storage/Stacking, 10. Disaster Management, 11. Evaluation/Authentication of written and printed heritage, 12. Lamination, 13. After Care and Maintenance of written, printed and archival materials, books and records, 14. Transportation of books, records etc. There will be practical classes pertaining to the subjects handled. They will be taken to institutions which maintain books, archival materials and records.

Faculty of the Institution

Dr. V. Jeyaraj, being the Director of the Institute and have a vast experience of over 35 years, will handle most of the classes and coordinate the programme. Prof. B. Ramesh Babu, Former Professor of Library and Information Science, University of Madras; Dr. P. Perumal, Former Conservator of Sarawaati Mahal Library, Thanjavur; Mr. P. Renganathan, Executive-Director, Photolam System Pvt. Limited, Chennai; Experts from Government Departments and other private organizations will be the resource persons.

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction will be English. Both theory and practical classes will be handled in English.


The fee for attending the workshop will be Rs. 6000/- (Rupees six thousand) only.

Examination and Certificate

There will be a written test at the end of the workshop. An objective type of test will be conducted relevant to the subjects handled. A certificate of participation will be awarded at the successful completion of the workshop on all days. The participants will have to submit a dissertation for about 10 pages on any of the chosen titles relevant to the subject of the workshop.
