Introduction The Hepzibah Institute of Heritage Conservation was founded by Dr. V. Jeyaraj, former Curator, Chemical Conservation and Research Laboratory, Government Museum, Chennai-600 008, on 8th March 2009 in order to train interested persons in the field of conservation of heritage and museology with a view of safeguarding the cultural, artistic and written heritage. It conducts regularly training programmes in conservation and museology in the institute, arranges workshops and seminars in colleges and other cultural institutions besides delivering lectures in the field. It provides consultancy services in chemical conservation and museology to those who approach the Institute in this regard.
Training on Preventive Conservation of Books, Manuscripts and Records Hepzibah Institute of Heritage Conservation conducts a short-term course on Preventive Conservation of Books, Manuscripts and Records for those who are employed in cultural institutions like libraries, archives, museums, galleries, colleges, corporate offices and also to those who are interested in this field. This course is slated for the period from 19th to 21st 1 December 2011 (3 working days).
Syllabus of the Training Programme The following titles will be handled during the course. 1. Introduction to written heritage, 2. Material Science of written materials, 3. Documentation including photography, 4. Damaging agencies to the written heritage, 5. Preventive Conservation, 6. Interventive Conservation, 7. Conservation of written materials 8. Restoration of written materials, 9. Storage, 10. Disaster Management , 11. Evaluation of written heritage . There will be practical classes pertaining to the subjects handled.
Faculty of the Institution Dr. V. Jeyaraj being the Director of the Institute will handle most of the classes and coordinate the programme. Prof. B. Ramesh Babu, University of Madras Fr. Dr. Vijay Kiran, Archivist, Mylapore Diocease, Chennai; Mr. P. Renganathan, Director, Photolam Pvt. Limited, Chennai; Mr. J. Abraham Durairaj, Technical Manager, Photon, Chennai; from Department of Museums will be the resource persons.
Medium of Instruction The medium of instruction will be English. Both theory and practicals will be handled in English.
Fees The fee for attending the training programme will be Rs. 2000/- (Rupees two thousand) only.
Accommodation and Food The Hepzibah Institute of Heritage Conservation do not have accommodation facilities. But it can arrange accommodation on behalf of the participants on request. South Indian food can be arranged in the Hepzibah Home for the Aged on request on charge basis.
Examination and Certificate There will be an examination at the end of the training programme. An objective type of test will be conducted relevant to the subjects handled. A certificate of participation will be awarded at the end of the programme. The participants will have to submit a dissertation for about 10 pages on any of the chosen subjects within the time.
