The Government Museum Manuscripts Centre is conducting a Workshop on Curative Conservation of Manuscripts from 14th February 2011. I conducted practical sessions on Documentation and Analysis of Manuscripts on 22nd February from 10.30 am to 5.00 pm. The class was oriented towards introducing the participants on the subject of conservation of manuscripts starting from definition of manuscripts, definition of preventive and interventive conservation including restoration.
The participants were asked to write the meaning of different keywords pertaining to curative conservation. Various ways of finding out the pH of paper manuscripts were taught and the participants were asked to find out the pH of the manuscripts. They were introduced with the de-acidification methods and the paper manuscripts given to them were de-acidified with ammonia and barium hydroxide.
